서칭포슈거맨, 남아공 그리고 2012년 미국

우드스탁 이후 서구 대중음악사에서 가장 중요한 아티스트는?  남아공 백인 아프리카너에겐 밥 딜런, 닐 영, 그리고 시스토 로드리게스이다.

딜런과 영은 알겠는데, 시스토 로드리게스는 누구인지 모르겠다고?  영화 '서칭 포 슈거맨'을 본 사람이라면, 3대 아티스트에 디트로이의 70세 무명가수 시스토 로드리게스를 주저없이 꼽을게 분명하다.

 

'서칭 포 슈거맨'은 올해초 선댄스영화제에서 선풍적인 인기와 화제를 일으켰고, 내년 아카데미 영화상 다큐부문 유력 후보작 중 하나로 꼽히고 있는 작품이다. 70년대에 2장의 앨범을 내고 철저히 실패한 후 디트로이트에서 막노동으로 살아온 남자. 그러나 남아공에서는 아파트르헤이트를 거부하는 백인 아프리카너들의 상처받은 영혼과 좌절감을 달래줬던 걸출한 가수, 40여년만에 남아공의 열혈팬들에 의해 재발견됐고 스웨덴 말릭 벤젤룰 감독의 영화로 이번에는 미국에서도 재발견된 아티스트의 스토리는 한편의 진정한 신데렐라 스토리, 또는 '어번 레전드'이다.  영화에서 1998년 난생처음 남아공을 찾은  로드리게스가 첫 무대에 서는 장면은 진정 감동이다. 그가 무대에 서자 수천명의 관객들이 일제히 일어나 환호하는 바람에 공연을 시작조차 하지 못하는 장면은 이 영화의 하일라이트.

로드리게스의 음악이 다른 곳도 아닌 남아공에서 사랑받았다는 점은 흥미롭다.

흑백분리주의 정책으로 국제사회에서 외면당한채 고립국가였던 남아공의 백인들이 로드리게스의 'Searching for Sugarman'  'I Wonder' 등에 열광한 것은, 70~80년대 한국의 젊은이들이 김민기에 열광했던 것과 같은 맥락이라고 볼 수있다.

 

영화를 계기로 미국에서 로드리게스의 옛 노래가 다시 주목받는 것은 40년전 미국 상황과 지금의 미국 상황이 그리 다르지 않다는 점 때문이다. '무지개꿈'이라도 꾸기 위해 사탕가루같은 마약판매상(슈거맨)을 찾고, 크리스마스 2주전 해고를 당하며, 세상이 왜 이 모양인지 모르겠다고 'I Wonder'를 외치는 노동자들이 지금 2012년 미국에 넘쳐나고 있는 것이다. 그의 노래 가사들을 보면, 40년 세월을 거의 느낄 수없다.

<디트로이트 동향출신인 마이클 무어 감독과 로드리게스>

영화보다 감동적인 것은 로드리게스의 삶자체이다.

디트로이트에서 오물쓰레기와 건물철거 등 온갖 비정규 노동으로 밥벌이를 하면서도 세딸의 존경을 받고, 철학과 미술을 사랑하며, 때가 찾아온 순간 평생을 준비해온 사람처럼 무대에서 기타를 치며 노래하는 로드리게스는 돈으로는 규정할 수없는 영혼의 아름다움이란 무엇인가를 보여준다. 

영화의 대성공이후, 유럽과 미국 각지를 다니며 콘서트를 하고 데이비드 레터맨쇼에 출연하는가하면 cbs 60미닛에도 등장할 정도로 유명해졌지만, 그는 아직도 디트로이트에서 40년넘게 살아온 다 쓰러져가는 집에서 살고 있다. 여전히 빈털털이로. 평생 한번도 풍족한 적이 없었던 그는 콘서트 수입을 가족과 친구들에게 다 나눠주고, 평생 그래왔듯이 철저히 절약하면서 살고 있다고 한다. 그에게 콘서트는, 평생 묵묵히 해왔던 노동의 연장선인지도 모른다.  세상을 욕하며 사정없이 망가질수도 있었던 인생이었지만, 그는 오로지 노동과 음악이란 길에서 벗어난 적이 없었던 듯하다. 심지어 외모도 크게 변하지 않았다.

 

거리의 철학자, 도시의 구도자가 있다면 그 사람은 바로 로드리게스이다.
