Shlomo Sand: "I am not Charlie"

Nothing can justify murder, let alone mass murder committed in cold blood. This happened in Paris, at the beginning of January is an absolutely inexcusable crime. To say this is not original: millions of people think and feel and the rightly. However, in light of this terrible tragedy, one of the first questions that came to mind is this: the disgust felt at the murder must it lead to identify with the action of the victims ? Do I have Charlie because the victims were the supreme embodiment of freedom of expression, as stated by the President of the Republic? I‘m Charlie, not only because I’m an atheist secular, but also because of my fundamental antipathy oppressive bases of the three major Western monotheistic religions?

Some cartoons published in Charlie Hebdo, which I had seen much earlier, appeared to me were in bad taste; only a minority of them made me laugh. But that‘s not the problem! In the majority of cartoons about Islam published by the weekly, during the last decade, I noted a manipulative hatred for seducing more readers obviously non-Muslims. Reproduction by Charlie cartoons published in the Danish newspaper seemed abominable. Already in 2006, I had seen as a pure provocation, Muhammad wearing a turban drawing flanked by a grenade. It was not so much a caricature against Islamists a stupid assimilation of Islam with terror; it is as if we identified Judaism with money!

It is argued that Charlie is attacking indiscriminately to all religions, but that’s a lie. True, he made fun of Christians, and sometimes the Jews; however, neither the Danish newspaper or Charlie would permit, and it is pleased to publish a cartoon showing the prophet Moses with a yarmulke and ritual fringes, in the form of a loan shark air rogue, located at the corner of a street. It is good, in fact, that in the civilization called nowadays, "Judeo-Christian", it is no longer possible to release publicly the anti-Jewish hatred, as was the case in the not very distant. I am for freedom of expression, while being opposed to the racist incitement. I acknowledge accommodate me, willingly, to the ban on Dieudonne express too publicly "critical" and his "jokes" against Jews. I am, however, formally objected to it physically impaired, and if, by chance, I know what an idiot abused her, I would be very shocked ... but I would not go up to hold up a sign with the inscription "I am Dieudonne".

In 1886, was published in Paris, France Jewish Edouard Drumont, and in 2014, the day of the attacks by three criminals idiots, was published under the title: Submission, "The Muslim France" by Michel Houellebecq. The Jewish France was a real "bestseller" of the late 19th century; even before its release in bookstores Submission was already a bestseller! These two books, each in its time, has received wide journalistic and warm reception. What difference is it done with them? Houellebecq know that in the early 21st century, it is forbidden to shake a Jewish threat, but it is well accepted to sell books outlining the Muslim threat. Alain Soral, less smart, has not understood this, and because of this, it is marginalized in the media ... and much more! Houellebecq, in contrast, was invited, with honors, at 20 o‘clock news on the public service television channel, on the eve of the release of his book that helps spread hatred and fear, as well as the perverse writings Soral.

An ill wind, foul wind dangerous racism fleet on Europe: there is a fundamental difference between to attack a religion or a prevailing belief in society, and that to attempt or incite against the religion of a minority dominated. If, as in the Judeo-Muslim civilization: in Saudi Arabia, the Gulf Emirates today totaled protests and warnings against the dominant religion that oppresses workers by the thousands, and millions of women, we would have a duty to support the persecuted protesters. Now, as we know, Western leaders, far from encouraging "Voltaireans and Rousseau" in the Middle East, strongly support the most oppressive religious regimes.

In contrast, in France or Denmark, Germany and Spain where there are millions of Muslim workers, mostly assigned to the most difficult tasks at the bottom of the social ladder, we must exercise the utmost caution before to criticize Islam, and do not ridicule him roughly. Today, especially after the terrible massacre, my sympathy goes to the Muslims living in ghettos adjacent to metropolitan areas which are likely to become the second victim of the murders in Charlie Hebdo and the Hyper kosher supermarket. I continue to take to the reference model "Charlie" original: the great Charlie Chaplin, who has never made fun of the poor and uneducated.

In addition, and given that any text in a context, how not to question the fact that for over a year, so many French soldiers are in Africa to "fight against the jihadists", then though no serious public debate has taken place in France on the utility where the damage of these military interventions? The colonial policeman yesterday, bringing an undeniable responsibility in the chaotic legacy of borders and regimes, is now "reminded" to reinstate the "right" with its neo-colonial police force. With the American policeman responsible for the enormous destruction in Iraq without ever having expressed the slightest regret, he participated in the bombing of the bases of "daesch". Allied with Saudi leaders ’enlightened‘, and other strong supporters of "freedom of expression" in the Middle East, it preserves the boundaries of illogical sharing it imposed, there is a century, according to its interests imperialists. He is called to bomb those who threaten the precious oil wells which he consumes the product, without realizing that in doing so he invites the risk of terror in the city.

But basically, it is possible that he understood! The enlightened West can not be so naive and is the innocent victim in which he likes to appear! Of course, you have to be cruel and perverse assassin to kill in cold blood of the innocent and unarmed people, but be hypocritical or stupid to ignore the data in which the tragedy takes place.

It is also to show blindness not to understand that this conflict situation will get worse if we do not use a whole, atheists and believers, to work towards a genuine prospect of living together without hate another.
